Use the motor nameplate value where available. If you do not know it, use the approximate motor capacity.

Typical passenger lift motor: approximately 5.5–15 kW.
Change this if actual motor/controller data is available.
Controller, fan, lighting and other lift auxiliaries.
Lighting, pumps, security, fire systems and other loads intended to run on DG.

How much generator capacity is required for a lift?

The generator required for a lift depends on more than the lift motor's kW rating. Generator sizing should also consider the number of lifts, motor power factor, lift auxiliary loads, whether multiple lifts can operate together, other essential building loads and the starting characteristics of the lift drive system.

Volo's Lift Generator Load Calculator provides an indicative DG capacity in kVA for preliminary planning. It is useful when planning a new building, apartment, villa, commercial property, hospital, office or other building with an elevator.

Why is generator capacity specified in kVA?

Generator sets are commonly rated in kVA because the generator alternator has to supply both useful electrical power and reactive current associated with connected loads. Motor power factor therefore affects the apparent power requirement.

Does lift motor kW equal generator kVA?

No. A lift motor's kW rating should not simply be treated as the final generator capacity. The motor's power factor, controller characteristics, auxiliary loads and starting behaviour need to be considered.

What loads should be considered with a lift generator?

  • Lift traction motor load
  • Lift controller and electrical auxiliaries
  • Cabin lighting and ventilation
  • Multiple lift operation
  • Water pumps where required
  • Essential building lighting
  • Fire and safety systems
  • Security systems
  • Other equipment intended to operate on DG supply
Planning tip: If the actual lift motor nameplate data, controller details, starting method and building electrical load schedule are available, use those values instead of generic assumptions.

Lift Generator Load Calculator – FAQs

How do I calculate generator size for a lift?
Start with the lift motor rating, convert the motor load into approximate apparent power using the power factor, add lift auxiliary loads, account for the number of lifts and operating diversity, then include other essential building loads and an appropriate starting or planning allowance.
What generator size is required for a 10 passenger lift?
There is no single generator size for every 10 passenger lift. The required capacity depends on the actual motor rating, drive system, power factor, number of lifts and other loads connected to the generator.
Can one generator run two or more lifts?
Yes. A generator can supply multiple lifts when its capacity, starting performance, protection system and building electrical design are suitable. The calculation should consider whether the lifts can operate simultaneously.
Does an MRL lift need a generator?
An MRL lift can be supplied from a generator during a power failure if the building's electrical system and lift controller are designed for generator operation. The generator requirement depends on the lift's electrical characteristics and other connected loads.
Can a lift run on a DG during a power failure?
Yes, when the lift, automatic mains failure system, generator, changeover arrangement and electrical protection are designed for generator operation. Exact emergency operation should follow the applicable project design and lift manufacturer's requirements.
Is lift motor kW the same as generator kVA?
No. kW represents active power while kVA represents apparent power. Motor power factor and other connected loads affect the generator's required kVA rating.
What information is needed to calculate DG size for an elevator?
Useful information includes lift motor kW or HP, number of lifts, lift capacity, drive type, power factor, lift auxiliary load, building load and the operating strategy during generator supply.
Engineering note: This calculator provides an approximate preliminary generator load estimate and should not be treated as a final electrical design or DG procurement specification. Final generator sizing should be verified using the actual lift manufacturer's electrical data, controller/drive characteristics, starting requirements, building load schedule, applicable electrical standards and the project electrical consultant's design.
